I am finding that when I go out these days, I have very few positive things to say. So, for now, I am going to take a short hiatus until I can get excited about going out in Austin again, and until I have the time that it takes to devote to writing and promoting this blog. But please, if you have any suggestions of new Austin gems-let me know! I'm so sick of all the dusty ones that have been around forever...

Hello my friends, it's been a while. I never got a post up after my birthday party since I was waiting for pictures for a while, so that is old news. However, the Justin Timberlake sing-a-long is still going on on Thursdays at Alamo Drafthouse and it is ridiculous fun. If you have to pee (and after one pint, half a bottle of champagne, and a martini shaker, I had to a lot), I suggest going during the middle. I am more of a fan of later Justin and his collaborations, which bookend the show. Young JT is in the middle. Go see the show at Ritz, though-I'm not a big fan of Village. Oh, also from my actual birthday night, I learned that the manger of Barcelona is a giant dickhead and does not like club kids, even though they play house and techno there. He almost kicked me and my friends out because we had glow sticks from the sing-a-long. Of course, I got a bit mouthy, so that didn't help. But anyway, fuck that dude and the dungeon of a club. Don't spend your money there.

So last weekend I went out only on Friday because I was totally sick. Sinclair and I went to see Brian Posehn at Cap City. Uh, funny, funny dude. His opener was ok, but my buddy Doug Mellard was hosting and he was actually the best of all of them. He is fantastically offensive. If you ever have the chance to go see him, please do. And support local, live comedy. For reals.

I went out last night, and due to the illness, it was the first time I had a drink in probably 2 weeks, which is kind of amazing for me. I met a friend who came in from out of town in the Warehouse District, and it was totally lame. Lucky was dead. Gruv was pretty dead, and even at the end of the night, Red Fez was pretty dead. And there were a ton of white people in there. It was really weird. It made me realize that I almost never go out on Thursdays, unless it's to an event. So, where the hell is everyone on a Thursday night? Is everyone down on 6th for college night? Help me out here, folks...

This Wednesday, the Get Right Kids will start their monthly Get Right Night at DB's on Rio Grande (in the West 6th district). DB's has officially become one of my top 3 favorite bars, and these guys (DJ QD and Kid Slyce) are pretty amazing (and not bad on the eyes). They're bringin hip-hop, bmore, juke, electro, dance, and a whole bunch of other good ish to this little gnome hole. And if you need a little liquid courage to get your ass on the floor, the bartenders are servin' up $2.50 tallboys and $3.50 wells (and these bartenders show lots of love with their pours).

Well, the busiest week/weekend of my life is over, and now the second busiest week/weekend of my life is about to begin. It's time for the big 3-0, and I've got to do it up right. So, here's the plan:

Wednesday:
The folks from Birds Barbershop are slingin' drinks at Mohawk tonight, so my bff who works there wants to check it out. Should be yum. Who knows after that...

Thursday:
Hot sexy white boy action at Alamo Ritz for my bday proper. The ladies and I are doing the Justin Timberlake sing-a-long, which I am pretty sure the programming director scheduled because he knew it was my birthday (just a joke-oddly enough it's his girlfriend's birthday, too). Somehow there are still tickets left, so get yours now. You really don't want to miss all the screaming and clutching. I just hate it for whoever sits in the theater seats after this one...

Friday:
Eh, not really sure what's going on for Friday. Taking suggestions.

Saturday:
Starting off the day with horseback riding (weird, i know-whatever), then a nice nap. Then it's off to Mother Egan's for the big birthday bash. It's going to be the 3rd best party of the year (behind Perez and the Red Bull Moon Tower). Wish me luck on making it past midnight without passing out!!!

Finally recovered from SXSW 2009

So you may have noticed that I have been away for a while. That is definitely thanks to the awesome madness that was SXSW 2009. I think last night was the first time that I have slept a full 8 hours in weeks. It was nice.

Weekend Wrap-Up 3/20-22

Ah, spent this evening relaxing in preparation for SXSW.

Friday was an evening of catching up on TV (my DVR is my best friend) and hanging with the pooches.

Saturday Sinclair and I went to the Grilled Cheese Invitational, which was AWFUL. It was poorly, poorly organized and resulted in a giant clusterfuck in a wet yard behind the Moose Lodge. We were there for 45 minutes and managed to get a sample from only one contender. If it weren't for the yummy Kraft Singles table, I would have starved to death. Oh, and the Queen of Cheese gave me a bite of her sandwich. If they can get their crap together and organize it better, it has the potential for greatness (I mean, it is grilled cheese after all). Sinclair spent the night and we played Rock Band until 5am and drank a lot of Tito's.

Sunday we spent the day screenprinting shirts in preparation for sx. I then went for my usual jaunt at Geeks Who Drink. Didn't do well again, but whatevs. Dani won a bonus question and the email question, and I won a bonus question about Blue Oyster Cult. Oddly enough, we ran into our lovely hostess Allison at a sxsw party earlier in the week at Malverde. She rules.

After that, Dani and I hit the sxswi party circuit (Facebook @ Pangaea, FG2 @ Lucky Lounge, Google @ Six). I should hopefully have a quick article up on austin.com soon, but if i don't i will add in a separate post. For now, feel free to read Dani's here. Ended the night at DB's, of course. Love that place.

Last night Fox 7's ATX Gossip Queen Danielle Dudek and I went to a happy hour at Malverde, hosted by Giant Noise PR and Empire Factory. It was nice, good booze (42 Below Vodka, Red Bull), good music (Will from Lambert's), interesting people.

Malverde (upstairs at 2nd & Guadalupe) was really cool. I absolutely love what they did with all the greenery inside-really understated but fascinating. I am hoping that the party set up is not how they have it on regular dj nights because the table was next to the bar and near the bathroom entrance. Total mess. The patio was nice, too, and the doors that opened onto it made it feel like you were still inside. Oh, and a cool pinball machine in the corner. The only negatives were the very tall staircase, and possibly the DJ booth, but if they move that, then thumbs up. I guess it will be easy to find out since DJ Mel now spins every Friday night there.

Moved on to 4 Seasons for some celeb stalking, but it was a little too early. Not pleased that they changed the snack spread from walnuts to soynuts. But the wasabi peanuts are still there, and bonus to our waitress for bringing us a bunch.

Weekend Wrap-Up 3/2-3/5

Why yes, I am just now posting last weekend's wrap-up right before this weekend's recommendations. I have been living in SXSW planning limbo. Forgive me. Next week will certainly not be buch better, so I apologize in advance.

Thursday: Took one of my best friends to Melting Pot for her birthday and restaurant week (though it was technically over the day before, they still gave us a good deal). Heaven. Pure Heaven. Wisconsin cheese trio, Veggies in coq au vin, and Bananas Foster, and a good bottle of wine. Awesome. This is a great place for a date-it is super private, and our waitress, Leia, was great.

After that went to Alamo Village for a midnight screening of Watchmen. Absolutely loved the movie, but hated that Alamo had technical difficulties that made the movie start 45 minutes late. And that they didn't compensate us with passes. I love Alamo, they get lots of my money, but that wasn't cool. I went to bed at 4am.

Friday: Cut Copy at Stubb's was super fun, minus all the fucking hipsters who were overdressed and over-loud. At one point I turned around to these two chicks having a conversation at the top of their lungs (in my ear), to ask them to be quiet, and one of them responded "Well, it's a concert?" Really? A concert that I paid $20 for? I musta missed that part. Stupid bitches. And p.s. the last few times I have been I have really hated on the (relatively) new concentration camp bathrooms at Stubb's, but as scary and creepy as they are and as long as the line seems to be, it is a very efficient system.

After Cut Copy I went to Nomad for SB's birthday. It wasn't really my scene, mostly because it was up north, but I liked that there were dogs on the patio. I hear it's actually a really cool bar, so I will definitely give it another try sometime soon.

Saturday: stayed home! yay!

Sunday: Another evening of Geeks Who Drink. This time was really hard; we didn't do so well. But I did find out that our team name from last week was voted one of the top in the country (Laurie & the Silk Spectres-i'm a geek, yes). Totally used it again since it was still appropriate. After that, over to DB's as usual. Yikes. Between the drunk guy flirting with my friend who ended up paying for most of our drinks and the awesome older gentleman, Lawrence, who bought 2 rounds of shots for the whole bar, I had a very, very good evening.

Well, after going to bed at 4am last night/this morning after watching Watchmen (amazing), I am definitely going to need a nap before seeing Cut Copy at Stubb's tonight. I'm looking forward to the laid back evening, with drinks at Nomad after the show to celebrate Sarah Beth's bday (again, you Pisces!!!)

Tomorrow I am thinking of hitting up the art opening at Lowbrow Emporium, then just laying low. I am hoping to get some stuff done this weekend, especially fixing the bugs that I keep noticing in this blog.

Sunday will likely see me at Geeks Who Drink, as that is always a good time. You should come out. For real.

Last night we went to Lucky Lounge to see Boombox, ATX and to celebrate Sam and Crystal's birthdays. The evening was fun, as always, though I was very disappointed in the evening out of the guy to girl ratio (last time I went it was a total sausage-fest, which works for me). My boy Damian took such good care of us with the drinks, that I totally almost forgot that I met Tennessee Titans'/former Longhorn Vince Young. So yeah, he's tall. We didn't really try to talk to him-he was trying to keep a low profile, but we totally got him to take pics with us.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Yeah, a little late, I know. What can I say, I'm a busy girl...

So Friday was Glen's birthday at Union Park. I haven't really done West 6th too much lately (I don't consider pubs and dives "doing West 6th"), and it didn't turn out as bad as I thought. I met some interesting people, met a really sweet bartender (see My Faves), and got pretty damn drunk :) I was saddened by how ridiculously packed the Boom Boom room was, though. Oh well.

Saturday was a pretty diverse evening that started at End of an Ear for The Dark Water Hymnal's Record Release. Was very fun. I like good music and free beer. Oh, and Sinclair managed to find this gem in the crates:

After that was Mandy's Birthday party (between there and End of an Ear, I basically had my own Waterloo Records reunion). After that was 4 Elements of Hip Hop at Mohawk. We got there really late but still got to see a few breakdance battles with some of the kids from Inside the Circle, which were so much fun. There is just something about breakdancing that gets me so excited. I was sad to not see any b-girls out, though-or maybe I just missed them before I got there. Anyway, it was fun, and the stopover at Creekside was great, too. I love running into random (though usually the same) people there.

Sunday was another night of Geeks Who Drink pub quiz at Opal Divine's. We didn't do so hot this time, I think we got 5th, but the questions were really hard. We did, however, have my favorite team name so far: Laurie and the Silk Spectres. Suck on that geeks :)My favorite round was definitely the "Robots Talking Dirty" with sexy song lyrics read by machines. "Me So Horny" and "Salt Shaker" have never sounded so...interesting. And damnit, I did not win the ninja clock.

Oh well, the evening wasn't a total loss, as I headed over to DB's (totally my new favorite bar), for some drinks and hanging out with my new favorite bartender (see My Faves). And I got to bed by midnight. Awesome.

Thursday: I won't actually be attending No Idea Fest, but if you are into improvisational/experimental music, this is the place for you this weekend. My friend Chris started the whole thing, and you can learn more by reading my article on austin.com.

Friday night means hitting up Union Park for a friend's birthday party. Happy Birthday, Glen :) I'm hoping I can manage to tolerate the crowd for a few hours, but getting really drunk and dancing in the Boom Boom Room is always fun...

Saturday evening/night is a doozy.

First stop will be the CD release party for Dark Water Hymnal's first full length album,As Above, So Below, at End of an Ear. These kids are so adorable, I want to keep them in my pocket and make them tiny beds of cotton. Oh, and their music is awesome, too.

Next is another friend's birthday party. I swear, you Pisces are gonna make me go broke. Happy Birthday, Mandy :)

And finally (hopefully), I plan to end up at Proper Entertainment's 4 Elements of Hip Hop event at The Mohawk. This event combines DJs, MCs, graffiti artists, and breakdancers into one (hopefully) amazing show. Another chance to check out my friend DJ P-Nyce, as well as a lot of other Austin DJs and MCs.

Sunday night is back to Opal Divine's for Geeks who Drink pub trivia. I skipped out on last Sunday and last Tuesday (my regular trivia nights), so I definitely need to get back into the swing of things.

Unfortunately, I did not get to enjoy too much of this party. Got there late, then had personal drama to deal with, so didn't get to see very much of the show that I paid $18 for. Urgh. There is someone I would like to ask for my money back...

Anyway, what I do remember was that What Made Milwaukee Famous was great, as always. The people at Vinyl Entertainment are nice. It was colder than a witch's teat. And I like free Lone Star.

So my evening (2/20) started with some free Feckin' Irish Whiskey at their happy hour at Mother Egan's. I thought it was moderately smooth whiskey, but thankfully some of my friends couldn't quite take it, so I got a few extras. We hung out and drank until toast time at 10pm, where basically all of the world toasts to Guinness. I, personally, am not a huge fan of the murky brew, but I like to celebrate alcohol and drinking in general, so whatevs.

Valentine's doesn't always have to suck

What do four, badass single chicks do on the holiest of bullshit holidays? Well, read on, my friends…

So Sinclair had the great idea to go to the Love Bites Power Ballad sing-a-long at Alamo Ritz. Two of the four of us being ticketless, we crossed our fingers, and luckily managed to get in. The evening was hosted by the ridiculous and kinda amazing Drafthouse Henri, who came out in hideous jeans, a plastic red vest, and a crazy long black wig. I’m still pissed he didn’t show us his tits. The show was good, lots of singing along, but not as much dancing as the Pop Princess sing-a-long. Oh, and btw, all you stupid couples who went to this so that you could do something non-traditional for Valentine’s Day: F you! You took up seats that my friends could’ve had. Go feed each other crème brulee already and be happy with what you’ve got.

Oh yeah, back to the show. Drunken Sinclair got up on stage and grabbed a mic to sing along to hotness Steve Perry’s Sherrie, Erin managed a power slide (who doesn’t love a good knee slide-and as she said, at least she got some knee burns on V-Day). The rest of the night begins to blur, other than singing the shit out of Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart, one of my all-time faves. I’m looking forward to the Mardi Gras Sexy s-a-l on 2/24.

After that, Sam and I headed down to Creekside to get a few cheap drinks and listen to DJ PNyce spin. This is the first time I wasn’t already completely drunk, and had the chance to hear how amazing he is. I recall some Humpty Dancing and other old-school goodness that makes me super happy. He just moved here from Baltimore, so if have the chance to check him out (Creekside, SXSW), do so.

After that we met back up with the other girls and headed to Rusty Spurs, the new gay bar between Black and Tan and Mugshots. Inside, the country-themed dance floor was covered with two-steppin’ boys, but outside was the dance floor the way I likes it: Britnified. There was dancing. There was drinking. There was smoking. And there was Beyonce.

So, to all my single ladies, I leave you with this final note:

A Spooky Friday the 13th

I like being able to say that I spent my Friday the 13th with DJ Spooky. The show itself, though, was good, not great. I can’t really put that all on him, though, as no one else wanted to pay $15 to see him, and I went alone. I just don’t dig on that. I did see a couple of people I know, though, and found it interesting that they were all musicians. It seems like a mark of quality when your fans are musicians themselves.

Golden Arm Trio was truly amazing, and it was nice to get to see them for the first time since I was in school, like 8 years ago (geez, yeah, feelin a little old). I highly recommend seeing their weird mix of experimental jazz/rock/weirdly beautifulness.

Last note about DJ Spooky: he is the hottest man I have ever seen manage to pull off the joutfit. Danielle and I typically spend our time downtown mocking those who try to rock the joutfit, but his cute little Q-Tip-like face was just too adorable in it.

Tuesday Nights are Alright

So Tuesdays are my traditional Mother Egan’s Pub Trivia night. We (me, Carol, Danielle, and Anthony) always have a really great time drinking Smithwick’s and eating fried mushrooms (they are killer there). The bar staff, especially Casey, Grant, and Ward, are all awesome, and I love hanging out there (that’s why my 30th birthday party is going to be on their patio). This time I got to play a round of darts with Ward (also the quizmaster), and managed to somewhat hold my own against a guy who plays with his own personal set of darts. Am I a complete dork for wanting to go get my own?

Oh, and special guest Mayor Will Wynn dropped by to (loudly) read a round of questions (see pics on ATX Gossip).

Anyways, after waiting out that insanely odd storm that blew into town for 30 minutes, I went and met Sam at Lucky Lounge. Neither of us had seen Boombox ATX in a really long time, so we decided to check them out. To start, ladies, the guy to girl ratio there on a Tuesday is like 4:1. Fantastic. Yeah, there is the obvious point that more guys equals more opportunities to flirt and also have drinks bought for you, but more importantly, it means less girls mucking up the bathrooms that so easily get disgusting there.

Anyway, Boombox was lots of fun. Damien, the bartender with the evil name but sweet smile, always takes real good care of me, so I usually manage to have a good time. Whether I remember that good time is usually the question.

Oh, and the answer to that question? Uh, no. Sam had to fill in a lot of the details the next day…

So there was a fire this morning at a few clubs on 6th Street, particularly at Vice and Blind Pig Pub. Firefighters say that the area between San Jacinto and Trinity should be back open for tonight's drunkenness. No idea yet what the cause of this three alarm blaze was, but I'm thinking Molotov ain't just a bar on West Sixth...(joke, btw-but it's still fishy as hell).
